National Geographic Adventure recently ranked Boston #1 in the eastern United States in its rating of the Next Great Adventure Towns. While we're happy to see Massachusetts at the top, maybe they should have looked a few miles further west.
The North Quabbin Region has hiking, fishing, canoeing and much more. On my way to work last week, I snapped the above photo of Tully Lake, between Athol and Royalston. It's a great recreation area. And some of the best parts of the Quabbin Reservation, the state's largest wilderness area, are located in New Salem and Petersham, just south of Athol and Orange.
One more thing - the average price of a home in the North Quabbin Region is about half the average price of a home elsewhere in Massachusetts. Someday Athol, Orange and the towns around us may be recognized as Next Great Adventure Towns. In the meantime, come join the adventure.
